Technology and Society Essay Example for Free

Technology and Society Essay Has technology had a positive or negative affect towards society? Technology is a part of our everyday life. Almost everybody in our society uses technology. For example, it can either be your computer, phone, game console, iPod, television, and many more other devices. However, technology has had a lot of positive affects in the world, and it has also had many negative effects in the world. One example of how technology has had a positive effect in our society would be shown by the usage of your cell phone. The cell phone has helped had a positive effect in society by helping people communicate in a faster way. Instead of emailing somebody and waiting for a long reply, you can just text somebody and get a faster reply in a few seconds. Another way that technology has had a positive effect on society is described by the way people use the computer. You can use the computer to find out information by just typing it in on Google and finding out what you need instantly. One example of how technology has had a negative effect on our society would be shown by social media. Technology has had a negative effect on society through social media by causing people to get fired from their jobs, due to the fact of what they post up or write on their account. As you can see, those are a few examples of how technology has had some positive and negative effects in people’s everyday lives. Technology has increased over 18,000 times from 1971 to 2000. â€Å"Many people around the world has described the Internet to be a global equalizer. The reason that people around the world describe the Internet as a global equalizer is because the Internet provides a store of information to anybody who has access to the Internet all over the world† (4). These people around the world claim that the information that technology can provide benefits of a large city to other countries and rural communities around the entire world. Which is an example of why technology has had a much more of a positive effect than a negative effect on society. Science and technology has also had a grand effect on society. Science and technology both show how communication and knowledge have been increased in today’s world. It has shown a positive effect in society by an improving access to information, advancing medicine, and improving sanitation. Everyday new advances in science and technology are discovered and continue to be a big benefit to society. Technology has proved to be a positive and very effective throughout the twentieth century. In this century it has been shown by people being able to access information about varies subjects through the internet. By news being so readily available online it brought to light many important issues, like â€Å"this century made racism a shameful practice; recognized gender oppression as a social evil; proclaimed human rights as transcending race, caste, and religion; pleased for international economic justice; began to celebrate diversity and to care for the disabled; and condemned exploitation of the young† (23). This is one major example of how technology has impacted society in a positive way. Ojeda, Auriana. Technology and Society: Opposing Viewpoints. San Diego, CA: Greenhaven, 2002. Another way technology and science benefited our communities and lives would be computers. Computers have become a household appliance. Computers have had an impact on society in a positive way because they play a big part of how technology is used. For example, the computer has transformed civilization. It also serves as a device where it can store and organize a lot of information. Also, the computer has many functions. You can transfer files, download, and upload files at a faster pace, which can save you a lot of time. â€Å"They not only think and follow commands but can make decisions, draw, design, scan labels, automate industries, calculate, translate, communicate, and more†(31). This shows how very effective the computer has been in society by being almost replicas of our mind. Another way computers show a positive effect on society is through the Internet. The internet is a very helpful form of communication. Communication has shown many examples of having a positive effect on society as well. Like, being able to search for a job, talk to loved ones far away and run businesses from home. One way that technology has had a positive effect on society would be represented  through the use of telecommunication. Telecommunication can prove that it has had a positive effect on society by showing how people can communicate easier. Such as ways that would be shown in cellular phones. â€Å"In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell transmitted his voice across eight miles over a wire† (32). Which shows an example of how telecommunication has started to have the influence it does now in society. OShaughnessy, Michael, and Jane Stadler. Media Society. South Melbourne, Vic.: Oxford UP, 2008. It shows from having another person’s voice traveling across eight miles over a wire to communicate easier with another person. That shows how cellular phones have had a big impact on society as well from starting out as a voice being transmitted in a faster way with a more advanced way by the use of physics, and electromagnetism. Another way that communication can show a positive effect on society would be how people communicate on the internet by websites such as Twitter, Facebook, Skype and etc. Communication has a major factor of having a positive effect on society. As you can see, not only have cellular phones can be shown to be proven a positive effect on society through telecommunication but, also through how technology resources can be shown as a great equalizer for education at Schools. Education at Schools has had positive changes due to technology and science. The education system is always trying to find better ways to reach children and help them learn the best way they can, because of this people saw technology to be a powerful tool that could be effectively shown by teachers and families to a better the way students to learn. Proof of this can be stated that it can be a â€Å"challenge for educators in a more helpful way because it helps show more advances in technology resources which means new gaps open up in educating students, as quickly as the old ones are† (41). Since technology resources have had that positive impact on students and educators it has also shown how it became an obsolete faster than a textbooks that educators, such as teachers used. Which shows how education at Schools is seen in a positive way on society. OShaughnessy, Michael, and Jane Stadler. Media Society. South Melbourne, Vic.: Oxford UP, 2008. Television has also proven to have a positive effect on society. Television has had a positive effect on society by providing a lot of entertainment  throughout our entire day. Television has also helped people out in society by creating a lot of jobs for people in the world. It has also provided people with a lot of news and information that can benefit us every day. Tips for safety, recipes for meals, places to shop and more are all at our reach just by changing the channel. Also, the weather, and national emergencies all over the world are broadcasted as they happen to keep us in touch with the rest of the world. Television has impacted society by showing people all around the world problems that other countries and cultures go through almost every day and how they all live. It has opened people up to the world and beyond. It helps make the world better, which is a big positive impact of science and technology. The internet has also influenced a positive effect on society also. One way the internet would prove to show how it has influenced a positive effect on society would be proven through how everybody uses social media. Social media has proven to be one of the biggest things that almost everyone uses almost every day. One of example would be how people use Facebook. Facebook shows how the internet how to connect with your friends and how to post up anything you want. One example of how Facebook can help is if you need to contact a friend, or a family member. You can easily message them, and receive a message fast. Which shows how social media and the internet can influence society in a positive way. Not only has social media proved to be shown as a positive thing in society. But, so has the internet has also proved to be a positive effect in peoples life’s then just social media. One example of that would be shown in other websites such as YouTube, Gmail, AOL, Yahoo, Google, Twit ter, etc. These websites can also give you a variety in a lot of entertainment, and provide you a lot of news and a lot of information about places and what is going on around the world. For example, Gmail your school can give you updates through your e-mail account and you would be updated with what you need to know with the information a teacher, or staff member gives you. Another example would be YouTube. YouTube can influence society in a positive way by providing you a variety of different videos to watch and laugh from. Basically it can entertain you just like the Television can. But, in more of a way that you can specifically choose from. Also, with Google you can search up anything you want to know or need to  research about in the world and find out instantly. Google can affect people in a positive way by helping somebody find directions, or answer your questions. It can also help you if you don’t understand something in school, and you try to find out more about it on Google. These are some examples of how the Internet can really influence people all over the world in a positive way. Even though science and technology has had some negative effects on society the positive effects outweigh the negative. As you can see, there are many reasons, and many ways to prove how technology has a positive effect on society. Whether it is shown in examples of your computer, phone, game console, iPod, television, and many more other devices. Technology has influenced society in a lot of excellent ways and has advanced our way of living in many ways. In conclusion, technology can be shown to effect people in today’s society and throughout history in many positive ways with learning new things, entertainment, and also communication. Computers, Television, Cellular phones, the Internet, and social media have shown examples in how they impact a positive effect on society and how they help and provide a lot with what they can benefit in today’s society. These are some reasons as to why, Technology has had a positive effect in society, than a negative. Bibliography Ojeda, Auriana. Technology and Society: Opposing Viewpoints. Essay --

Name of the book - India Grows at Night by Gurucharan Das I haven’t read any of the two Gurucharan’s previous books. Besides, this is the first book I will be reviewing for Developmental economics. The title of the Book only caught my attention for two reasons. First it reminded me of the famous speech by Jawaharlal Nehru â€Å"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.† His speech somewhat depicted the reality as India only started to develop at night. Second, it gave me some sort of insight of what I might come across in this book. It’s more of a statement which leads us towards the realness of our country. He begins the first chapter with the example of Haryana and Gurgaon. The unexpected rise of the neglected and underdeveloped Gurgaon in becoming a â€Å"Millennium City â€Å"and the surrender of a would-be planned city Faridabad, later even struggling to capture up with India’s first wave of modernization. It was discussed how private player s took charge in Gurgaon- which arose without an effective state whilst Faridabad with a proper functioning state, withered. Indian model was discussed – which was different than the rest of the world as India got democracy before capitalism. By the end of this chapter, das speaks about the shortcoming of the state and how to move from the private success and public failure in order to become a successful nation. In the next chapter he talks about the Anna Hazare’s movement and how a weak government was shaken to its core by a strong society. Delay in implementation of projects like POSCO – which had been caught in the web of red tape for 5 years. He also mentioned how 168 projects of Coal India had been awaiting clearance – which led to powe... .... In the last section he concludes by giving suggestions on what should be done and redefines the definition of a Strong state and mention that a state is required to grow - no matter how many inefficiencies it may have, he writes â€Å"a weak state is better than no state at all". This book is a brilliant piece by Gurucharan Das, which talks about India’s impressive economic rise despite the presence or rather the absence of a state. With its narrative approach it is easy for readers to understand. Das takes you on a journey beyond 1900 and gives a glimpse of our past and present in order to understand the lacunae that India is facing. The part I disliked is he stressed a lot more in explaining the relevance of a strong state. But this book attempts to show us a path which could help the state deal with governance shortfall effectively. Nishant Sharma Radio stream

How Creativity Has Been Applied to a Business Idea or Problem Essay

To make a business grow and achieve productive and efficient results you need to invoke creativity which has always been an essential business skill. Since long time creativity has been applied to a business world as companies seek to use it in all parts of the organization to make it gain more profits and to be exceptional from others. A business person has to find unique solutions every day and he has to know how to react to situation creatively. Richard Florida (2002) stated human creativity is the ultimate economic resource. The ability to come up with new ideas and better ways of doing things is ultimately what raises productivity and thus living standards. Every individual is creative. Creative person is defined as curious, optimistic, imaginative, hard – working. He enjoys challenges, are able to accept problems easily and see them as new opportunities also he does not give up easily. Each of us see things in different way people are used to see or do, we come up with c reative ideas and solutions which make us to explore our creativity in more depth. Creativity is a process from where creative ideas come from and creativity is personal skill which is essential in this process. Creative thinking skills and attributes explain how people are dealing with various problems or ideas. Skills such as imagination, problem – solving, taking – risks and reasoning help us to identify problems, find right solutions, generate and improve ideas also realize them and apply to business process. Intuition, motivation and flexibility make us to select a proper idea, explore different ways to combine and achieve it, improve attitude towards risk and eliminate boundaries. In order to achieve his purposes person has to be self– confident, determined and persistent. There are many ways how individual can improve or develop these skills. For example, JAV company ‘Sysco’ organized creative education seminars for their employers and results were stunning – every participant sales increased about 25 – 30 % bu t this is just one example how creativity has been developed in companies there are more ways to do that. First of all, we need to evolve ideas and understand that there is more than one problem solution also we have to perceive that each problem can be solved in a better or different way. The second way to improve creativity is called synthesis. Using this method more than to ideas are compared and from them combined into completely new idea. Also, in this report I would like briefly identify some of idea generation techniques which help to realize ideas in a particular business area. Smith (1998) identified 172 idea generating techniques which he allocated to smaller groups which tell us about each technique further. Idea generation technique is essential process of creativity. Brainstorming probably is the most important technique which involves generating a lot of ideas and solutions. Brainstorming was the first technique and it is called ‘the mother of all idea generation techniques’. Also, it can be used for both groups and individuals. Second technique is collaboration when group of people are working together on purpose to achieve a particular result. They share creative ideas between each other and make a final decision in order to improve the whole process. Reflection is third idea generation technique which concentrates on previous work when designers reconsider projects, schemes, plans or documents from where they can find a particular idea and develop it further. A fourth method is called socializing. It is about communicating with others about particular subject totally unrelated to the current work. Sketching similar to documenting reflects on drawing approximate scheme or plan of an idea. â€Å"In order to help individuals in the idea generation process, researchers have identified methods to stimulate creative thought, generate more ideas, and expand on the solution space.† Nowadays more and more organizations are using personality tests to evaluate their employees’ character, to find their motivations and goals, to understand their work techniques and creativity level also to discover their barriers which they need to improve in the future. Companies have started to use personality tests in the past five years so that they can find a potential employee’s strengths and weaknesses. If questions and answers are quite accurate and test is done properly it can help an employer to find more about person’s advantages and disadvantages. It is very important to know because one of the most important points is that most of personality tests help to recognize unqualified candidates. â€Å"Although experts warn that many personality assessments don’t deliver what they promise, legitimate scientifically validated tests are helping employers evaluate job candidates to select those best suited for particular positions. Other tests are designed to measure intelligence, honesty, management aptitude and other qualities.† Napoleon Hill stated ideas are the beginning points of all fortunes. When you have a great business idea it is not enough just have it somewhere in your brain, the second thing to do is to rea lize it in other words it is called idea feasibility. Same as this American author stated by having a successful idea you can open doors to new opportunities and attract fortune. The idea is like a new product which can be applied to a new business. The more successful the product is the better results it will give in the future. In this case creative thinking helps to discover new and useful ideas also it leads to new business opportunities. Realize your business idea is possible in many different ways. For instance, you can start networking with various potential business people from all over the world also you can organize a highly creative team and start working on a particular idea. Opportunities and ways are endless it is belong to you, your creativity level and idea success. The final step after idea feasibility is action planning. Once the idea is considered and discussed you need to think about the way how it will work and how long it will takes to you to achieve your aim. â€Å"Action planning is a process which will help you to focus your ideas and to decide what steps you need to take to achieve particular goals that you may have. It is a statement of what you want to achieve over a given period of time.† As every planning process it involves some of basic steps which I would like to identify in my further research. Before you start setting a plan you need to be self-motivated and innovative because our goals have to motivate us to achieve them, but not to be too difficult and unreal. Also, you have to think about all possible ways which can make you closer to your aim. Do not forget to think about barrier which you may meet during a working period and try to find solutions how to cope with them effectively. When you start working on your plan you need to identify the main objectives. The second step is to prioritize each task, what need to be done first and what after. Once the list is done, you have to start working and use your own initiat ive, some people prefer working individually others may like to work in a team, it is important to choose your preferable work technique then work will be done quicker. Also, one of the most important steps is to finish the work to a deadline. To sum up, effective planning gives us basic steps so that we would be able to reach our objectives and it helps us to realize our ideas. In this report I have considered the main topics of creativity and it process. I explained how creativity has been applied in business process and organizations. Which personal qualities make individuals be more creative and how they can apply these skills to realize business ideas or solve problems creatively. Which part personality tests take in a business companies and what is the main meaning of them, why employers use this technique when they want to select the right participant to take a place in the organization. As well as, I considered the main factors about idea feasibility and explained techniques which are essential to idea generation. I identified the basic steps of action planning also described them in more depth so that it would be more easy to understand and try it in practice. If you consider yourself being creative you have to start setting a plan how to realize your ideas and you may have considerable results in the future. Creativity is a substantial tool which lead people to find right decisions and solve problems using their own initiative or special methods which are unusual for those who are not creative. It helps to set new strategies and products that employers apply to business. â€Å"It is highly likely that your creativity has been diminished by social norms and life experience, but it can be fostered and revived. You may not even think you are creative, but that is not true. â€Å"Creativity is our birth right it is part of what makes us human.† List of References University of Kent (2010) Action Planning [online] available from < http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/sk/skillsactionplanning.htm> [26 December 2010] The CBS Interactive Business Network (2002) Personality counts: Psychological tests can help peg the job applicants best suited for certain jobs – Cover Story [online] available from < http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3495/is_2_47/ai_83058907/> [27 December 2010] SCORE Counselors to America’s Small Business (2010) How to Incorporate Creativity into Your Business Practice [online] available from < http://www.score.org/article_how_to_creativity.html> [27 December 2010] The IEEE Computer Society (2008) Idea Generation Techniques among Creative Professionals [online] available from [28 December 2010]

More often than not they find themselves in that situation because of circumstances beyond their control.
